Aging by the Numbers

Some type of disability (i.e., difficulty in hearing, vision, cognition, ambulation, self-care, or independent living) was reported by 36% of people age 65 and over in 2012. The percentages for individual disabilities ranged from almost one quarter (23 percent) having an ambulatory disability to 7 percent having a vision difficulty. Some of these disabilities may be relatively minor but others cause people to require assistance to meet important personal needs.— Administration on Aging, A Profile of Older Americans: 2013
In 2010, 11 million, or 28% of people aged 65 and older, lived alone. As people get older, their likelihood of living alone only increases. Additionally, more and more older adults do not have children, and that means fewer family members to provide company and care as those adults become seniors.—Census Bureau/AARP
