Schemes, scams and fraud, perpetrated against our older community members are becoming more
prevalent, predatory, and persistent. In 2022, the FBI estimated losses of $3 BILLION due to Elder Fraud.
Common themes include the grandparent request for help for a relative who is in trouble, government
(Social Security and IRS) requests for details in response to ‘technical problems’, threats that bank
accounts or credit cards will be closed, non-existent sweepstakes, the promise of quick-cash home sales, and bogus home repairs.
Senior citizens are targeted because they are trusting, polite, and patient. A high percentage own their own homes and have retirement savings. Perhaps they are lonely, bored or facing financial challenges as savings are depleted. Any of these elements can create vulnerability. But fraudsters are after only one thing: the money – with no concern about the hardship and chaos they may leave behind.
Learn about common devastating schemes, scams, and fraud and how to protect yourself.
